 Top 10 Dive Sites: Olympia Maru, Coron
One of the Japanese fleet that was sunk in September 1944; the Olympia Maru was an Army Auxiliary Supply Ship. Its length of 130 meters and breadth of almost 20 meters makes it one of the larger ships on show to divers in Coron; although there are a few that are larger still. The Olympia Maru is located about an hours banca ride away from Coron Town; it sits upright in 30 meters of water, but the main deck is at 18 – 24 meters. The site offers easy penetration to cargo holds as well as a good variety of fish life. There are several large Puffer Fish, Lion Fish, Scorpion Fish, shoals of Bat Fish, Snappers and innumerable sponges.
Quick Fact: The Olympia Maru was sunk on 24th September 1944 by direct bomb hits from US Navy Helldiver bombers, escorted by US Navy Hellcat fighters. A direct hit on the engine room caused an oil tank to explode on the port side, and further bombs hit the galley and cargo holds. Fire spread throughout the Olympia Maru, and it sank at approximately 14:26 hrs. It is known that at least 14 crewmen, 3 gunners and 2 passengers went down with the ship.
